October Wellness Walks

Wellness Walks schedule for October 2018. All walks are on Tuesdays at 8:00am, each week at a different Lake County Forest Preserve.

Oct. 2: Grant Woods North, Lake Villa. Entrance is on the south side of Hwy 132, east of Hwy 59 and west of Fairfield Road. We’ll walk the 1.3 mile loop (east loop) plus the 0.3 mile wood chip trail, 1.6 miles total.

Oct. 9: Raven Glen West Forest Preserve, Antioch, Mid-trail. Entrance is on the south side of Hwy 173, ON Savage Road, then park on White Road. We will start the trail at Savage Road, and walk East through White Slough and around the loop. 1.8 miles.

Oct. 16: Rollins Savanna Forest Preserve, Third Lake: Rollins Road, west of Hwy 45 and east of Hwy 83. Take Drury Lane (there is a traffic signal) south about ½ mile, and park in the Rollins Savanna parking lot. We will walk along east the Millennium Trail for about 25 minutes, and then return along the same path. Approximately 1.6 miles.

Oct. 23: Sun Lake Forest Preserve, Lindenhurst. Entrance is on the south side of Grass Lake Road, east of Hwy 83 and west of Deep Lake Road. We’ll walk the east side of the loop, just across the bridge and back, approximately 1.5 miles. Going all the way to the spur would be 2.2 miles.

Oct. 30: Village of Antioch. Park behind the United Methodist Church, 848 Main St., Antioch. Let’s look at people’s Halloween decorations! We’ll walk south on Toft Ave. to Lake St., south on Victoria, west on Harden, north on Spafford, west on Lake (on the sidewalk) north on Hillside, east on Orchard, north on Holbek and back to the UMC. Got it?! 1.39 miles. BONUS WALK: Sunday Oct 14th: Rollins Savannah, Grayslake. This upcoming walk is a part of the "Hike Lake County" series sponsored by the Lake County Forest Preserve District. It is more of a "Nature Walk" than a hike, as there will be periodic stop-and-go with learning stops, but the educator for this walk (Carolina Schottland) is an energetic and knowledgeable speaker. Should be a nice session for those who can "do the distance" but could use periodic stops (brief) and a little local knowledge on the side. The learning part of this walk will focus a lot on invasives and edibles, but will also discuss prairie plants and natives! No cost; out of respect for other program participants, leave pets at home. Meet at Drury Lane entrance parking lot. 3.5 miles. Link: https://www.lcfpd.org/events/guided-hike-lake-county-20181014/

You can see Lake County Forest Preserve maps online at www.lcfpd.org/preserves; this takes you to an interactive mapping system. The old print maps (.pdf) are within the internal menus, but they can more easily be found with a Google search. LCFPD also has a smartphone app. Questions: Call Melanie Fuhrmann at 847-703-0890 or Ken Church at 847-651-1940. Any of these walks may be shortened or cancelled if the weather poses a safety risk.
