Out In The Wilderness

March 9, 2019

During the Offertory at tomorrow's Divine Worship service, the Chancel Choir will offer "Out in the Wilderness", by Jay Beech. This is based on the Lectionary scripture for the day, which deals with "The Temptations of Christ"

The verses include:

Tempted by the Devil out in the wilderness.

Tempted by the Devil out in the wilderness.

Though you try to be strong, it’s been so long,

he whispers in your ear and you know he’s wrong.

Tempted by the Devil out in the wilderness.

Angels all around you out in the wilderness.

Angels all around you out in the wilderness.

You are far from home where wild things roam;

There’s danger everywhere but you’re not a lone.
Angels all around you out in the wilderness.

We repeatedly see in Scripture where someone is sent "Out in the wilderness" not so much as a punishment as a learning process, Instead of relying on our own strengths in times of trial, the wilderness is where we (re)discover our need to rely upon our God and trust in Him to provide, to see us through, to be faithful to his promises.

That whole "lost in the desert for 40 years" thing... yeah, that.

Now Jesus himself is out in the wilderness being tempted. How does He handle it? Pastor Paul Koch explores how this question applies to us, in this posting on "The Jagged Word" Blog
