Church Council Update for May 2019

May 17, 2019

We wanted to update the congregation on what we have been talking about in the Church Council.  Here is a synopsis of what we talked about at our May Meeting.

- We continued to discuss our “Why?”   We talked about how difficult it is for organizations to maintain focus on their why, and have a shared sense of why as organizations change and mature. We are better able to identify what we are called to do as Christians if we are able to clearly state what we believe and then translate that into mission. This is going to be an ongoing focus of the council, and the congregation in 2019 continuing the work of the CAT survey.

- Finances are always an area of focus in churches.  We are so grateful to our congregation for the financial support that they provide to St. Stephen.  During the fall Stewardship program, we asked the congregation to grow in generosity and giving, and you have answered the call. So far in 2019 (January to May), giving is up compared to the same time last year by 11% ($50, 623 compared with $44, 828).  We have a long way to go in the year, and unexpected things can (and will) happen!  But we want to thank the congregation for their continued prayers and generous financial support.

- Restoration of the Narthex and Sanctuary are complete.  We are receiving payments from the insurance company.  Next step is the roof which was damaged by hail, and replacement of an air-conditioning unit which was also damaged by hail.

- Maintaining the building and making it better to meet our needs, is ongoing. We are going to be removing three dead trees along our property line.  The front doors locks need replacement to ensure that we can secure the building.  We are going to be replacing one furnace (which heats the Fellowship, and the classrooms) when we replace the air-conditioning unit that cools that end of the building.  We are purchasing Nest Door Bell Cameras to improve security and safety of the building for the front doors and the door on the same side of the building which is used to go into Fellowship.

The Church Council is: Donal Barlow, DaveTelleen, Vicky Hill, John Cook, Dennis Freidle, Sharon Gregory, Shelly Daun, and Edy Wiermeslage.

Our next meeting is going to be Tuesday June 4th @7 PM.  All are invited.
