Wellness Walks for September
All morning walks begin at 8am on Tuesdays. Walks are held at a nearby Lake County Forest Preserve (different each week), or other walkable venue. Distances are modest (usually less than two miles), and routes are planned to return us to the starting point in approx 45 minutes. Any of these walks may be shortened or cancelled if the weather poses a safety risk.
If you need more info, please contact Melanie Fuhrmann at 847-703-0890 or Ken Church at 847-651-1940. In case of inclement weather, please check the Saint Stephen of Antioch Facebook Page or contact Melanie or Ken. [There is also an evening group, which meets at 6PM on SOME Mondays at McDonald Woods. Contact is Cynthia Olsen.]
You can see Lake County Forest Preserve maps online at www.lcfpd.org/preserves; this takes you to an interactive mapping system. The old print maps (.pdf) are within the internal menus, but they can more easily be found with a Google search. LCFPD also has a smartphone app.
Sept. 3: McDonald Woods Forest Preserve: Entrance is located on the south side of Grass Lake Road, just went of US Rt. 45, east of Deep Lake Rd and east of Beck Rd. We’ll walk the western side of the McDonald Lake Trail Loop, to the bridge and back, 1.4 miles.
Sept. 10: Falling Waters subdivision: NEW WALK! South of Route 45 and Sand Lake Rd/Sterns School Road. The SOUTH entrance to Falling Waters is one mile north Grand Avenue, and faces Deerpath Drive to the east. Turn left (west) onto Falling Waters Blvd. Then take the very first right onto Falling Waters Lane, before the closed Lake Forest Medical & Fitness center. The grey and white clubhouse is on your right. We will meet in the clubhouse parking lot. - We will walk a figure-eight through the townhouse complex and then walk around the pond to the east. The pond trails are crushed gravel/sand and there is a woodchip area where we will walk past trees and wildflowers. If we do the entire loop around the pond, our total walk will be two miles. If the woodchips are wet, we can skip that part and shorten our walk past the pond, for a total walk of about 1.4 miles.
Sept. 17: Grant Woods North, Lake Villa. Entrance is on the south side of Hwy 132, east of Hwy 59 and west of Fairfield Road. We’ll walk the 1.3 mile loop (east loop) plus the 0.3 mile wood chip trail, 1.6 miles total.
Sept. 24: Rollins Savanna Forest Preserve, Third Lake: NEW WALK! Rollins Road, west of Hwy 45 and east of Hwy 83. Take Drury Lane (there is a traffic signal) south about ½ mile, and park in the Rollins Savanna parking lot. We will walk west along the Millennium Trail for about 25 minutes, and then return along the same path. Approximately 1.6 miles.
